Kintsugi is the Japanese art form of mending ceramics with gold to celebrate the repairs. It asks us to challenge our perception of waste and celebrate things that may otherwise be discarded. Traditional kintsugi methods use urushi, a food-safe lacquer derived from the urushi tree, to mend and reinforce broken pieces and bring them back into reuse. Urushi has been used for thousands of years to decorate and waterproof crated goods.
Dan Singer is a traditional kintsugi practitioner based in Philadelphia, PA. His repairs use authentic DJapanese materials and methods to create food-safe, lasting repairs. He has received instruction from Makomako and Gen Saratani in New York.
